If you did the key trick where you hold down the trip and reset buttons while turning the ignition on, a 999 code means "end of codes" --> the instrument cluster did not store any trouble codes.

BTW, does the key on-off-on-off-on trick work on your van? I've never been able to get that to work on mine.

Nope, he done what some one else had posted on this site about the trip/reset, turn key to on wait 5 seconds, then release.
His check engine light is on and want go off but that is the only code he can get.

He performed an instrument cluster calibration. "P" or scanner codes are what turn on the Service Engine light. To get the P code he can either do the key dance and read them off the odometer or better yet, go to your nearest AutoZone where they will connect a scanner and read the P codes. It's free.

All P/scanner codes have 4 digits preceded by the letter P.

Is he seeing any symptoms along with the SE light? If it's running great a leaking gas cap seal can produce the light. Try tightening the gas cap.
