Sounds like your climate control panel module needs to be calibrated/reset. Here's how: "Turn on the blower. Simultaneously push the top and bottom wiper buttons on the left side of the ventilation control panel for 5 seconds. All the lights on the panel will light up. Then two lights on the left side will alternately flash for about two minutes and you'll hear the ventilation modes cycle. When just the top light on the left side slowly flashes push that button and you're done. All lights should be out and you should be back to normal. This is the ventilation control calibration test and it resets the ventilation system computer."

Don't attempt this if your A/C doesn't work. You'll get flashing A/C lights till it's fixed.

Next time you get a service engine light cycle the key from off to on (not start) 3 times, leaving it on. Now count the flashes of the service engine light. These flashes represent a two digit code and will lead you to the component that is making the light come on. Getting any other symptoms? FYI the service engine light indicates a malfunction effecting emissions.

Nothing to do with your problem but, the clock spring is a coiled wire installed just behind your horn pad. It allows you to turn the steering wheel and maintain the electrical circuit to the drivers airbag, the horn, and on some models the cruise control. As stated there is a recall effecting 96 and 97s (?).

My ABS warning light kept coming on even though the brakes were fine, after the clockspring was replaced via recall, things were good again. That was my only symptom.
