Check voltage at the reverse light socket while in reverse...

    -----

Possibly: Is the shift-position dash indicator lamp for "Reverse" illuminating while in reverse?

If not, I'd guess the transmission range sensor (TRS) - which communicates gear position to the TCM. It requires removal of the trans valve body to get at. (ATF+4 fluid and filter, while you're at it...)

Bad wiring probably, or perhaps a dirty electrical contact in the light housing on the reverse bulb.

It could be the neutral safety switch/ backup light switch on the transmission. My backup lights wouldn't work( checked all connections, switched light bulbs, checked voltage at the bulbs), finally got under the van and cleaned the plug, they worked for a while, then died again, final solution was replacing the transmission, now I have no problems. I suggest you check the switch plug, and replace if you can ( i think it was about $15.00 CDN at dealership).

The Transmission Range Switch detects Reverse and powers the Backup Light relay in the relay box located to the right side of the battery as viewed from the front. I suggest that you check or swap out the relay. You also could jumper the female terminals in the relay box to supply power to the lights and and see if they come on (make sure you get the right terminals!).

one vote for the neutral safety switch. It's cheap and quite straitforward to change if your van has 3-speed trans.
It's on the Transmission. All you need is 2" socket that's it.

Disconnect the cable attatched to the switch by simply pulling it and unplug the switch using 2" socket.
and replace it with new one. It costs $18 at Canadiantire.

    Good luck.
