2003 Grand Caravan whirring noise

About 41,000 miles (almost all hiway), 2003 Grand Caravan 2-wh drive, automatic. We have recently experienced a whirring/whistle noise that seems to come from under the vehicle near the driver's side rear (sliding) door. Someone told us it might be the fuel pump going bad, but we know nothing about car repair. Does this seem reasonable? The sound does not vary with acceleration (same sound even in park/neutral) and occurs inconsistently. we've heard it only after fairly long (hour+) driving in warm temps (but it's not the A/C). About 2 months ago we heard a very similar sound that the dealer said was the alternator going bad and we paid $500+ to have that repaired, but that sound DID vary with acceleration (or just sitting in neutral/park & pressing the accelerator). I know almost nothing about cars so just wanted to know if this sounds like a fuel pump going bad. Again, it may be "distance" or "heat" related? If it is a fuel pump going bad is that something that we need to repair right away (we can't make it make the sound on short drives to let a mechanic hear it) or is it just annoying and unlikely to worsen. Any idea what something like this should cost? thanks very much for any help
