    Question Rusty strut towers

Is there any rhyme, reason, or pattern to which vans tend to have the rusty strut towers? I have no problem with it but two of my neighbors do - one t&c and one GC.

My 99 T&C is rusting badly on the driver side tower. I have been soking it with lube to slow it down as best I can. Not sure why this is such a problem.

My passenger side looks like it just left the factory, the drivers side not so much. If I keep the van two more years, and the chances are very good since my son starts college next year, I'll have to do the repair. Until then, forget about it. In case you didn't notice, I used an Italian gangster accent as I wrote that.

I've never really put too much thought to it; however, clearly some batteries generate more gas than others. With that in mind, I'm thinking specifically of the battery that was in my 1995 VW Passat, that darn thing gassed so much that it exploded one day after a quick stop to pick up a bottle of wine on the way to a summer party. Unfortunately I was no where near a Sears at the time forcing me to buy a Pep Boys battery. That new battery gassed too, not enough to cause it to explode, however, the case was bulged out after only a year or so in the car.

So, I have to ask. Is it the charging system that causes more gassing on a vehicle to vehicle basis? The battery? Some combination of the two? I ask because if ever there was an environment that could lead to the strut tower issue (i.e. living in the northeast, bad weather and of course road salt), our 1998 has lived in it, and yet there isn't even the slightest hint of the rusting issue on either strut tower. I find myself wondering about this because our OEM battery failed rather early (like maybe 30 months), and I had a DieHard Gold put in to replace it. Could it be that the OEM battery has a tendency to gas more than some of the aftermarket replacement units?

Go to the local auto shop and pick up a jar or spray can of rust nutralizer. The stuff works! Then apply a coat of 3M anti-rust spray, a product you can pick up at your local auto body supply house, or just paint over the area after the rust has been adequately nutralized.

My 2000 voyager has same issue. Only on driver side. I hear Chrysler has a kit or some type of fix. I am getting information to show my dealership. This is a major danger if it gives.

I noticed that our 98 has some surface rust on the driver's side but nothing major yet. I am planning on getting some sandpaper and the rust 'stopper' and then just spray paint it.

If you see rust on top, chances are there's rust between the two layers of metal and that's what rusts out.

Getting rid of the surface rust on top isn't even like putting a bandaid on this problem!
