    malfunction indicator light

hello, the malfunction indicator light on my vans information center stayed on last week.I looked in the manual, and read that it will stay on if the gas cap is loose or if i got some bad gas!The gas cap is tightly screwed on and the van runs good like it always does. The van has 45,000 miles on it and the book has no maintenence scheduled other than oil and filter changes.let me say that the engine light is not flashing.I did disconnect the battery and the light stayed off for 2days.Any thouhgts on this would be appreciated, John

Hi John. Although your gas cap is on tight, it may not be operating properly (venting pressure, etc). In addition, there are a handfull of sensors that can go wrong but provide no bad driveability symptoms to indicate that they're malfunctioning. A common system is the evaporative system, which recaptures gasoline fumes and returns them to the tank (vs. the atmosphere).

If you take your van to an Autozone, I think they provide free diagnostics scanning. They should be able to give you the codes stored in your computer which will tell you what the problem likely is. Report back here when you get the codes and we can help you troubleshoot your van.

Also, year/model/engine would be helpful for us in the future.

Pull the P-codes using the key on/off sequence, and let us know what it is saying (or use Autozone etc.)

Like Jason says, there is quite a few reasons for the MIL to come on.

We have a 2001 with the 3.3 as well, and had a very small leak in evaporative system. It ended up being a 2" piece of rubber hose under the air filter housing. It took me 15 minutes to find/replace it. The stainless line it connects to is flared outward, which caused the rubber hose to split/crack.

Let us know the codes, and you can read them yourself too, you don't need Autozone.

    malfunction indicator light code

My 2006 chrysler minivan has 51,000 miles on it. The mil has been on (not blinking ) for less than 24 hours. In the milage area there is a code 9A5CAP. What does this mean? Can I find out and avoid the diagnostic fee? If anyone knows, please help.

    Hi Pam,

I suspect that may read gASCAP and it is letting you know the gas cap is (or was) not tightened securely. Tighten the cap, and it should go away after a few trips. If not, have a service center check it out. Its possible you have a small leak in the EVAP system, but the most commmon cause it a loose cap or poorly sealing cap gasket.

The gas cap seal is an integral part of the emmission control system on these vehicles, and a loose cap interferes with the system pressure test at start-up.
