97 Chrysler Town & Country Gas Gauge Problems

My 97 T&C LXI has a gas gauge problem, the gauge will drift from full tank to empty and set off the bell under the dash (ding, ding ding etc.). When the tank is full no problems, but when itís filled just under full the dinging starts. Is this a computer problem, a sending unit problem? Any help is much appreciated.

My '97 Caravan used to do that...fuel guage would go nuts when it reached 3/4full.

I'm sure there is a tsb for it, and the fix was quite simple if I remember.

I'll see what I can dig up.... in the meantime maybe someone else has the service bulletin handy.

Had the same problem a few years ago. Replaced the sending unit, which requires dropping the fuel tank and removing the fuel pump. Decided to go ahead and replace the fuel pump since a new one comes with the sending unit already attached. You can get the sending unit separate from the dealer, but it was about half the cost of the Carter (OEM) fuel pump obtained from the local parts store. By the way, went ahead and replaced the fuel filter since it also requires lowering the tank also. Bottom line is that the sending unit was the problem. Good luck.

Rich, do you have a searchable index of TSBs? I am near positive that there was one related to this fuel guage problem. May even be specific to '97 model years. I know at the time, I did not have to replace any parts to fix it. Unfortunately I cleaned off my PC a while ago...and tossed the archives of TSB I had on file for my old van.

I have checked all of them that I have and can find nothing for the 97 year. The 2001-2002 model had some TSB's but nothing I can find on the older vans.
