Steering wheel shakes back and forth

My steering wheel shakes back and forth at any speed, you can watch it at crawl speed without touching it go back and forth. it doesn't seem any different whether braking or not nor cornering. we have replaced both tie rod ends the tires are a couple years old but look real good we even put tires and wheels off another car on it and still did the same. could it be the rack and pinion?

I would take the brake pads off and sand then clean along with the rotor. If that doesn't fix it, the rotors are probably lightly warped.

Check the front wheel bearings for looseness too. The causes are loose bearings, warped rotors, or bad tires with bulges in the tread area, or a bent rim.

how much "back and forth" are you talking about? How old is the vehicle and what are the miles? Have you had the CV axles checked?

Since you said you put different tires and rims on it from another car (assuming they were good), it seems warped rotors are the most likely culprit.
Changing out the rims and tires should have netted you SOME kind of change.
A warped rotor would drag once every revolution and produce a pulsating sensation and if severe enough, could cause your steering wheel to move back and forth.

Alignment is another possibility...but it would have to be off pretty badly.

I would suggest an ABS check but the chance of that causing it is really remote.

My bet is on warped rotors(s).

My steering wheel was shaking for a while - until the left side CV joint tore itself apart.
Replaced the drive axle, no more shake.

Jack the van up at the front, place trans in neutral and crawl under (using axle stands) and check to see that the drive axles have no play in them.
Easiest way is to turn the road wheel backwards and forwards with one hand while holding the drive axle with the other hand. They should both turn at the same time with no noticable free play.

Mine did that for a few hundred miles before the CV joint broke and dumped all the grease out.
