Been having some starting problems with the van and have tryed to pinpoint the problem. Driving down the road and the battery light comes on and smoke is pouring out from under the hood! All the insulation from the from the starter positive off the battery has gone.... Started pulling it all apart this morning.
With a history of starting problem, one possible explanation is that the contacts in the starter solenoid wore out bad enough for the movable (round) contact to get stuck in the wear grooves in the stationary ones.
Hate when that happens.

Something shorted out the positive wire badly. You are lucky the battery didn't blow under that amount of current flow.
