Water Pump and Timing Belt Replacement

Could someone please be that kind and write me a step by step direction how to replace a water pump and the timing belt on my 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan, 6V, 3.8 engine. Thank you very much. Michaela

Water pump is easily accessible through the passenger wheel well.

The 3.3/3.8 engines use a timing chain which is good for the life of the engine. No replacement necessary.

I don't know if your model requires it, but some have noted that loosening, not removing, the bolts on the passenger side motor mount will give enough clearance to get the pump out. (It lowers the engine a skosh.) You can find full directions on removal at the Autozone.com website, register and look at the repair instructions.

I would recommend taking it to the shop for the waterpump. There have been a few guys who do their own work on here, that have had to button it back up and take it to a shop for completion. It depends on how die hard you are.

It was 15 degrees F here when mine needed replacement, so Chrysler got it. I may have tried it on my own otherwise.

x2 what andy said (as always ) The water pump isn't a maintenance item on the 3.8 like it is with the 3.0 timing belt. The 3.8 has a timing chain that doesn't need to be replaced on a schedule like a timing belt. The water pump is easily accesable from the bottom (if the 4th gen's are the same) and only needs to be replaced if it's bad.

    Welcome to the Forum
As was mentioned, pending where you're located, it may be much easier to have the dealer do it, it is very tight quarters where the pump is on the engine. The 3.8L is basically the same block as the 3.3L, but longer stroke and larger bore. The chain is well designed to last the life of the engine.

Are you having leakage at the pump, or are you just curious how to do it? Pending your year van, the HAYNES manual covers much of your maintenance and is about $30 at Autozone or PepBoys.

If you wish to share your location we can assist in recommendations much better.
