I don't think so. The wireless control module is in the column. But I'll ask at work tomorrow to make sure...

And yes, it does control the anti-theft, remote fob functions, and on some vehicles it is what reads the tire pressure monitors.

    And what is WCM?

I think WCM stands for wireless control module.

If the WCM controls these functions, then there is a good chance its responsible for our key and fob problems!

Duh! I'd say WCM does stand for wireless control module. We just never call it that at work, we always say wireless control module. LOL!!

And it does control all those functions. So yes, it very well could be your problem.

I stand corrected, the thing you put the fobic (new fob key thing) is part of the wireless control module as well. lxman was correct. I was wrong.

But again it does control all those functions, and more in some vehicles.

Same problem here..."Bad Key" message intermittently...sometimes for a long time

5 days before the problem started, I had a 2nd key programmed by a locksmith…no problem.
The day before the problem, I programmed a 3rd key myself using the instructions in the operator’s manual…no problem.
The day the problem happened, I was walking to the car in a parking lot, and I hit the panic button to find my car. The horn beeped 3 times and I turned off the panic switch. I got to the car…had my 3 keys in my pocket…I opened the locking glove box and put one of the keys in there. I locked the glove box, and then tried starting the van. The message “Bad Key” flashed as I put it in the vehicle. It would not start…appeared to be dead, but the key fob was able to unlock doors and open the automatic side and rear doors.
I tried all 3 keys and the same thing happened. Would not start. I fiddled with things for a bit, and eventually the car started. I shut down the engine, removed the key and tried starting it again. Bad key message and then dead. Still all three key fobs unlocked the doors and opened the doors and hatch with no problem. Eventually after fiddling, it started the van again…can’t figure out what in the fiddling was the cause of freeing up the problem.
Got to my next destination. Same problem. “Bad Key” message and had to fiddle with things before I could get them to work properly.

I had something very similar... but found a quick and dirty solution.

Mine started the same thing... usually you could open the door but not start the car... or vice versa you couldnt open the door but when the door was opened manually you could then happily start the car.

Whilst waiting for replacement parts for the car I stumbled apon a temporary cure... change the location of the steering wheel!...

I found that when one of the two scenarios above would strike, if I used the tilt adjuster on the steering wheel to drop it down slightly everything worked.

When they went to swap out the WCM they found that some people at the factory had run the antenna cable from the WCM up through the steering wheel assembly and that when I had the steering wheel above a certain level (I am tall so I have it one click from the top) the antennae cable would get 'shorted' against the hinging mechanism in the steering wheel.

I heard that the key is designed to allow only certain number of ignitions then it stops working. That may be the problem.

Truer words have never been said. Go back to conventional keys and ignition switches . I'll take my chances with someone breaking in and trying to start the car.
