Windshield wiper motor on intermittent is flaky

2000 Grand Caravan with 3.3L V6. Windshield wiper motor not working very well on any of the intermittent settings. Usually works for a few swipes and then just stops. Anyone know what that problem is?

    Thanks
    -Bob

Probably the multifunction switch. (the windshield wiper/blinker switch). It's a common problem on the 3rd gen's, especially giving wipers a mind of their own.

OK, I've been searching this forum and the web looking for "multifunction switch". Two quesitons:

    1. Can you refer me to instructions on how to replace it?

    2. Is the "switch" actually the entire assembly. Like this picture?

    Thanks

    1. Very easy to change, there are a few screws under the column suround. It comes off in 2 pieces. IIRC you don't have to take the top all the way off, just lift it up. Then 2 more screws hold the switch in, unplug the wiring connector and it's out.

    2. Yes it's the entire assembly.

My 99 has the same problem

Any idea what the MF Switch costs ? Any after market sources? Part numbers ?

I found an AIRTEX Part # 1S1443 @ Rock Auto but it is $108

Thanks. Any suggestions on where to purchase the part? I really can't spend any more than $50 so is the junkyard my only option? But it seems like a used part is just as likely to be as bad as the one I've got now :-(

    $50 ......Local junkard (entire column)
    $71 ......Advance AutoParts/BWD Switch Part# S14308
    $116 ....Auto Zone/Duralast Switch Part# SW1497, OEM#: 4685586
    $144 ....Local dealer

    Thanks

Go for the Advance Autoparts. Borg Warner is a quality part, especially compared to "dura"last. The junkyard switch might have the same problem but it might be worth a shot.

I would buy one......but no Advance Auto in Oregon or the west coast and it seems from their website that they do not do online orders..........

I have a 98 with the same problem. Only on intermittent, the thing does a couple swipes and stops slightly above the 'park' position.

I've been lurking on this forum, deciding whether I should dig into this or not.

I've read (do some seaching) that it may NOT be the switch; rather some type of parking sensor in the wiper motor assembly. There were a couple of posts that had replaced the switch and no change.

Again, I don't have the answer, but don't get too wrapped up in the multi-function switch as the problem yet; it's pretty pricey to replace new. I'd suggest a couple of boneyard dives -- the switch and the wiper module, and see which one works.

Please post your results. Not sure if I'll fix either way --trying to just do the basics on this van -- and this doesn't qualify. Though if it's an easy fix... maybe.

    Good luck.

I've had 4 gen 3 vans and they ALL have had this problem to one degree or another. Maybe others have had better luck but I just live with it and when the cycle stops I tap the end of the stalk to get it running again.

Some days it works just perfect with no stops and other days it happens over and over. Really weird for sure.

I would be surprised to hear of anyone with one of these vans NOT have this problem.
