Chrysler May Face Minivan Recall The Chrysler Group may be facing a recall of its popular minivans, according to Reuters. Some 2002 minivans could have a problem in their audio system that can lead to a fire; three fires have been reported with one vehicle a total loss, Reuters reports. The fires have occurred in summer months, while driving with the radio on. About 418,783 vehicles will be investigated for the problem, which could lead to an official safety recall if the NHTSA determines an engineering fault exists.

DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group faces a U.S. investigation and potential recall of 418,783 of its 2002-model minivans because of reports of audio-system fires.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's inquiry includes Dodge Caravan, Plymouth and Chrysler Voyager and Chrysler Town & Country minivans. Three fires have been reported, including one in which a minivan was destroyed, NHTSA said Monday on its Web site. The fires occurred in the summer when the vehicles were being driven and the radio was on, the agency said.

Max Gates, a spokesman for Auburn Hills-based Chrysler Group, declined to comment.

Chrysler, the third-largest U.S. automaker, sells the most minivans, and its Caravan is the top-selling model.

The federal action is a preliminary evaluation, which the Washington-based agency either closes without further investigation or upgrades to an engineering analysis.

The initial inquiries are upgraded in 26 percent of cases, and about seven in 10 that reach the second step result in a recall.

Some 2002 Caravans were recalled on four previous occasions to repair the fuel system, replace the fuel filter, provide child safety-seat information and replace running boards.
