I have just failed emissions with errors P0442 and P0455 . The check engine light has been on a few months now , but I haven't had time to check it out on my own. Now I guess I don't have a choice but to address this problem. Anybody knows how I can get rid of this nuisance without having to give an arm and a leg to the dealer ? Really need to pass inspection.
Probably start with clearing codes, and maybe do a web search to see what the causes of that code are then get into some diagnostics and test out each option.
What year is your van? If it is 2002 - 2008, these codes relate to an Evaporative Emission System leak. This could be as simple as a loose gas cap. I would check to be sure the cap is on tight. Then disconnect the battery for 15 minutes. This will erase the codes and turn out the check engine light. Then see if the light comes back on. Let us know what happens.
