    Angry Sentry Key Immobilizer SKIM

    03 Grand Caravan

Seems the security system is working well ---
I insert the key turn to on, all the necessary dash lights come on including the Red Vehicle Theft Alarm Light it then flickers once, then stays on
Of course the van will not start.
Sometimes the theft light willflicker a few times, then go off - then the van starts.
Is there a "back yard fix" or not?
I don't see and haven't read on any of the forums of a way around this short of the dealer.

    Any comments are appreciated.

First thing I would do is try another (spare) key and see if the problem remains.

I would first suspect an electrical problem.

Make sure the battery is in good shape and the posts and wires are clean and tight. It also couldn't hurt to reset the computer by pulling the IOD fuse or disconnecting the negative cable for a few minutes.

Well, I took it to the local dealer (Superior) since it started just fine twice today, to get a diagnostic report in case there was something -
First time in history the time actually failed for the mechanic
So, it's sitting on a hoist in the garage now-

    It's the BCM

The dealer tells me after an hour of diagnostics that the BCM is defective.

Unless you "trust" this dealer, I would hold off until you check the electrical stuff first. Many shops (and dealers) will quickly jump to replace the computers first.

Although you don't have the MIL light on, I would scan it for codes. A bad computer will often give you a code.

These vans are very senstive to voltage spikes and your problem could easily be a bad cable or battery, especially if you are still running with the original battery five years later.

    battery??

I'll ask a few pointed questions tomorrow
waiting for the part to come from anywhere in North America now - none were in Ontario warehouses - they're checking Winnipeg and Edmonton

If a new battery will fix it - why wouldn't they know that?
As far as trust goes - they're the only game for 100 miles, so that's that

I realize that you may not have much of a choice with that being the only dealer nearby. If you have the van , I would take it to an auto parts shop or even an independent repair shop. Many places will test the battery and scan the computer for codes for free.

You can even clean and tighten the battery cables and check for basic codes your self (no scanner needed), if you are so inclined.
At this point, I think you have nothing to lose. Good luck and keep us posted.

    battery

Well, I did clean the battery posts and tried to reset the computer by pulling the fuse and removing the battery cable.

I also tried starting it the "Eliminator" - a portable emergency battery pack thing.
So as far as voltage to start goes, there should have been lots.
I did the on-off quickly thing also to see if any codes or check lights would activate and got nothing - and I did get a code before when I forgot to replace a vaccum hiose when I cleaned the Power Steering reservoir (following the info I learned on this site)

The only thing I did differently last weekend prior to setting this off was to plug an inverter into the power outlet and run a laptop. So I don't know if there was some back feed into the power system that would then have caused something.
