I have a 2003 town and country, 3.8L AWD. It has loud rattling noise coming from under the hood on the passenger side. I have had the water pump and serpetine belt replaced. I feel that it may be coming from the alternator. I dont hear it as much when it is at idle with the ac off. it is very loud when the a/c is on and in gear. I would appreciate any expertise on this and instructions on how to fix it.
You said it sounds like its coming from alternator, but when the a/c is that is when you get the noise, right? Not saying that it is is the a/c pulley but write you appears to be in that direction. What do you think?
Another helpful video for for diagnosing this issue. I've been having a very similar noise on my van. Personally, though, I'm going to call BS on the replacing the belt and tensioner as well as per the video's instruction.
I had a very similar noise based on your description. It turned out to be the AC compressor starting to fail. It completely gave out right at the tail end of the really hot weather we had this past summer. With the brakes, suspension, tires, transfer case, and exhaust that all went bad since the last inspection, I didn't even bother fixing the AC, or anything else. Repair cost was more than what I owed, so I just traded it in.
