Fan turned off after car is off

My 2005 T&C sat for 24 hours in my garage and all of a sudden the fan came on by itself and wouldn't turn off until I unhooked the battery...I noticed it after it had probably been running awhile, as I tried to start it and it wouldn't turn over. Dealer thinks maybe it is the relay switch? Right now I have it charging with a battery charger...any suggestions?

I am guessing your refering to you cooling system fan, not you HVAC fan?

Weird that it turns on like that. A bad relay or temp sensor are the only 2 things I can think of.

Anneken,

This happened to me this winter. Darn thing drained my battery and I had to get a boost.

Word is that if the fan is on when the ignition is off, then it is the fan relay module ... not the sensor. This is consistent with the wiring diagram that shows that an "always" hot lead goes from the radiator fan fuse, to the relay module, to the fan.

The temp sensor is not in the loop until the system is on (ie. key in ignition).

Alas, there does not seem to be an aftermarket part available. The replacement part PO4868332AE costs about $100 CDN. YMMV. The good news is that it is an easy fix. The 10000' view:
1 - Disconnect battery to preserve fingertips (in the event of unexpected fan operation).
2 - Remove the 4 or 5 screws and two bolts that hold the front grill in place. Gently pry the grill out and you will see the module sitting on the chassis crossmember on the driver's side of the vehicle (i.e. between radiator and grill).
3 - Drill out the rivet that holds the module to the chassis crossmember.
4 - Disconnect the old relay module and replace with the new one.
5 - Rivet the new module in place.
6 - Replace the front grill and fasten screws/bolts.
7 - Connect battery and go. Keep an eye/hear out for renegade fans until you are sure the fix is "the fix".

The modules on previous gen vans seem to have a aluminum back on them and used the chassis as the heat sec. These 4th gen modules have aluminum fins on the top which handle most of the cooling. The mounting "tab" is aluminum, but the back of the module is all plastic.

Take a look at some other threads for more info ... this problem has been seen before.

Welcome to the forum. Let us know how things go!

Best,
Radman

aaarg! They didn't have that when I needed it! :(

My local NAPA "thought" they had a replacement, but it was a completely different unit. The one sselander indicated is the right one alright. :thumb:
