i have a 2000 dodge caravan that has a ticking sound in it. my first thought was a lifter as that is what it sounds like, but after some thought i think it could be the timing chain. just wondered if anyone had advice on this, the van has 155000 miles on it and the noise started all at once. it runs fine it just has the ticking noise. thanks in advance for any help or thoughts u may have.

could be a lifter, mine tick in the winter when its been a while since an oil change, i put in some marvel mystery oil to thin the oil a little and it went away.

Also another car had a loud tick all of a sudden and it was a spark plug wire that had worked loose. the ticking was the fire shooting to the plug from the connector inside the boot.

be careful of your vaccum hoses while doing the ole reach-around to check the plug connections on your chrysler engine. youll break them and have to pull the whole battery tray to fix it.

These vans do not have an exhaust donut starting in 1996

Is is safe to assume you are not hearing the injectors or canister purge valve

Timing chain is not a 'ticking' noise, and I have yet to encounter a failure of the timing chaing on 3.3/3.8 engines even at 300,000+ miles

lifters are a common source. Also I've encountered many failures of oil feed to the rear head and many failures of the rear rocker arm shaft (not oil related but broken anchor point for the shaft always right by the alternator_

Welcome to the Forum :hi:
Pick up a Haynes Manual for your year/make/model/engine.

The "ticking" is notorious for these engines. Get some SEAFOAM and add it to your oil to clean out the lifters. Also, next oil change, have a Motorcraft FL1A oil filter installed. Do a SEARCH on this forum for the FL1A and you'll understand why it's recommended. Yes, it's a FORD filter, but it also fits Chryslers. It's also large, etc. :thumb:
