Hello. Just got a used '06 GC (3.3) in April '09 with 63,000 km on it. A month (May) on the road the MIL turned on with an EGR needing to be replaced. Dealer (used car, not official Chrysler) changed it for free.

I have been averaging 16 - 18 liter per 100 kilometres on it (very high!) so I told dealer about it. Last month (June), we decided to have a tune up, with the plug wires changed too. I was only charged for parts.

Three weeks after the change (just last week, 3rd week of July), engine was hesitating upon start-up, MIL turned on again and was flashing. Pulled out P0300 (misfire) and P2302 (coils) from it. After checking wires, etc, engine turned off.

Engine was cranking but not starting so had to have it towed to dealer. Dealer put in fuses (according to him, fuses were blown) put upon ignition, fuses blew. He had it brought to the local Chrysler they work with and they said there was a short in the wires which they have seen before which resulted in the alternator not working. Chrysler changed that and it's now back to my used car dealer and they are checking for the codes now.

My questions:

a.) What could possibly cause the p0300 and p2302? Can the work done with the tune up possibly cause that? Parts are MOPAR.
b.) Are these usual repair things for this model?
c.) The dealer also mentioned a possible PCM repair / issue. Just in case, is the PCM covered by the basic emissions warranty? I live in Canada and a second owner. Car has 67,000 km on it.
d.) Are these issues the possible cause of my high gas consumption?

Thanks in advance!

Some more info:

I believe consumption is 13 - 14 MPG, summertime, with tires inflated properly (36 psi), primarily city driving. Also using mid grade fuel 89 octane. I know the premium one is not advised.

Also, I noticed that the middle chair seatbelts do not restrain if pulled against unlike the ones in the front. Is that normal too?

Here's some info on the P0300 code http://www.obd-codes.com/p0300 The P2302 code could be the coil pack and the coil pack could also cause the P0300. You could test the coil using a multimeter but many times it will check just fine but still be bad. A flashing SE light indicates cat converter damage is imminent unless fixed soon.

In the US the PCM has an 8 year or 80K mile emissions warranty. No idea if that applies in Canada.

Called Chrysler Canada:

PCM and CAT are under 8 year 130 km warranty.
Coils, plugs and wires changed. Still a misfire. Might be PCM, mechanic says. Chrsyler mechanic says that I have to fail emissions test before honoring the warranty though! That, IMHO, applies to the emissions performance and NOT emissions DEFECT. I believe I have the latter!

He even said I am not covered for the 8 years despite Chrysler Canada telling me I am.

Am still negotiating. Might take it to another dealer. It really takes some pushing for these warranties to take effect, eh?

Funny thing with warranties and dealers.....many dealers prefer to buy auto parts store items over the OEM stuff.I believe its because if the part fails again its easier to warranty it from their local auto parts place (which they usually have a good relationship with) vs fighting with Chrysler.I bet the dealers are treated just as harshly by Ma Mopar as the dealers treat their customers. One reason why they try to deny as many warranty claims as possible.
After reading online about tons of complaints with LH cars/Neons/Sebring/Minivans/RAMS/Grand Cherokees.....I will take my chances with a used, sub $5K priced vehicle over new anyday. Why pay for the leftover warranty coverage when they wont honor it?
I feel for anyone who dares venture into a stealership with a warranty problem....many times the dealers are forcing people to drive unsafe vehicles when they say nothing is wrong and they couldnt duplicate the problem.

Cylinders 1 & 4 use the middle coil in the three coil pack. Each coil gets a signal to fire on a separate wire from the PCM. Hopefully the techs checked that wire. If not they need to before going for a PCM. BTW you can get PCMs for $300 USD on the internet.

Van is with me now. Chrysler eventually honoured the warranty after MUCH pushing by me and my used car dealer. Here is the breakdown (and cost) of what they repaired:

a.) diagnosed

P0685 ASD Relay Control Circuit
P0688 ASD Relay Sense Circuit Low
thus they removed generator and repaired broken wire on it.
Tested DRB (what does this mean by the way? Iknow what ODB is...) and diagnosed ignition coil, circuit open:

P2302 Ignition Coil #1 Secondary Circuit- Insufficient Ionization

Used car dealer changed it, to no avail. (Story above)

This was the point where Chrysler gave me a tough time, not wanting to honour the warranty for emissions.

b.) So, they tested for emissions. IT FAILED OF COURSE.
c.) They replaced PCM.
d.) They replaced ignition coil, saying it was cracked. Used car dealer got the part from them, HA!
e.) re-tested for emissions! GRRR!!!

COST: (C$)

a.) 242.95
b.) 35.00
c.) WARRANTY
d.) 181.20 (with labor, coil is 91.20)
e.) 17.50

TOTAL: 476.++

I am now hoping that this will also improve my MPGs! Ahahaha... that may be a tall order though.

Anybody have any tips for me to watch out for regarding these issues I faced?
