2001 Voyager 36K treated like a baby.

I know that this should only be a coincedence, but this morning I changed my left brake lamp light and when starting the ignition again the check engine light went on.

Initially when I first started the vehicle to get a replacement bulb there was no check engine light. Now the light remains on, there are no codes and it is not flashing.

I did fuel vehicle last evening and maybe did not secure gas cap, but not sure, poor fuel mix...etc? I resecured and after checking my manual and calling the dealer I was told that after several normal driving sessions it should go away.

I have already driven vehicle around 15-18 miles with a few trips and light is still on, does the ODB eventually reset itself. I am starting to worry, hope it is nothing major.

It will reset itself if there is not a fault continually turning it on. I would go to the nearest Autozone and have them connect a scanner and read and reset the codes. It's free. Second choice is to disconnect the battery for at least 30 seconds. If you do that the tranny computer has to relearn your driving habits. This can take several days. You may experience hard shifting. If the light comes on again come on back.

Actually, I would unhook the battery for about 10 minutes to clear the faults. I did the same thing.... I filled my tank up on my Dodge Caliber then drove off without putting the cap back on....DUH>>>> bright move, eh??? Anyway, while driving away... sure enough, I hear the .."BING" and look and see the Engine light on.. I stopped and put the cap back on and once I got home, I disconnected the negative battery cable for about 10 minutes... hooked it back up, started it up, and engine light went away.

Hope this helps.

I initiated the key dance and came up with these codes:

P1684 Driver 5 Line 4

On Chrysler products, this codes indicates that the PCM memory has been cleared within the last 50 ignition cycles. It is not an actual malfunction code.

P0456

Which indicates loose gas cap that could associate with EVAP Leak

I checked the gas cap and re-secured even though it did not appear to be loose. I checked battery cables and they are secure. I decided to disconnect the battery terminal positive, (Does it matter if it was not the negative???) for around 10-15 minutes or so.

The engine light cleared Saturday afternoon after dc'd battery, until this Wednesday morning first operation cold ,approximately four days later after normal everyday driving sequence for the four days.

Now I am concerned because it resurfaced and has stayed on.

I decided to take it to the Chrysler dealer for diagnosis.

(Does it matter if it was not the negative???)
You usually disconnect the negative (ground) first and connect the ground last, when you are replacing the battery. Removing the ground first, keeps your wrench from shorting out the battery. If you were to be disconnecting the "PLUS", first, and your wrench hits the body, you'll not just see sparks fly, but will damage your wrench, and scare the daylights out of yourself.

it's just good practice to disconnect the ground side. :thumb:

CEL bulb problem

I just experienced a lamp light issue and got it resolved. I have a 2001 T&C 3.8L but it should be similar. I failed inspection for three codes P0442 and P0455 and P0456 and a check engine light bulb not working (burned out). The codes were related to EVAP leaks and I changed four hoses and a vent valve according to a different thread here. It was simple and cost $26 for parts including shipping from moparonline.com. That fixed the EVAP issues and I was able to hook up a OBDII reader, and clear the codes. I then went to NAPA and bought some PC74 bulbs (about $2.50 each) and replaced only the CEL lamp. I had it reinspected and all checked out except the bulb. The Check Engine light bulb was not working during a bulb check which is just turning the key to the on position and checking to see if all the instrument indicator lights illuminate. My CEL was not. In a hurry to get it fixed, I took it to the dealer. They pretty much ripped me off ($130. that's $6 for parts and $117+tax for labor/diagnosis) but I learned a lot. When you change the bulbs, change all the bulbs that are connected to that circuit board. There shouldn't be more than 8 or 10. Then reset the codes (battery disconnect or OBDII device) and see what happens. But you should check the hoses under the van around the charcoal canisters to see if they are cracked. That is probably the P0456 issue.
