First time posting,
I have a 2001 Chrysler Town Country with 3.8

For several months now, I've detected a strong smell of gas under the hood. After watching it for a couple of days, I noticed gas dripping out of the cap on the fuel rail. I found a post where someone removed the cap and replaced the internal o-ring with an o-ring from the fuel injectors. (Same size) I did the fix, and it has not leaked since I replaced the o-ring. The best part was I did not have to remove the fuel rail. (A new one is pricey) You will need to go to the auto store and ask for fuel injector o-rings for the van. Mine came in a package of 2 for 2.39 from NAPA.

Thse are the steps I took:

1) Relieve gas pressure from fuel injection rail:
Remove the fuel pump relay and start the van, running it until it dies. (The relay is in the fuse box)

2) disconnect the battery (just being cautious)

3) Move power steering reservoir:
Loosen the bolts for the reservoir , lift it slightly and push it to the side.
(There are 2 accessible bolts on the top, and one nut underneath that you just have to loosen)

4) Remove cap:
Gently pry the cap off, use the bracket for the power steering for leverage.

The pic with the blue o-ring is the original. (notice the erosion on it)

5) Prepare cap:
Remove old o-ring
Bend the tangs back on the cap so it will fit tightly when you re-install it.
Lubricate the o-ring with some fresh oil and put it on the cap.

6) Install cap:
Put cap over the hole making sure it is centered.
Gently tap on the end until it slides back in the hole and is seated properly.

7) Check for leaks:
Re-connect the battery.
Put back the fuel pump relay and start van.
Check for leaks.

8) Put everything back together:
Move power steering reservoir back and tighten bolts.

That's it, it is pretty simple to do as long as you are careful.
Not once did the CEL come on.
This cap is not for a test port, it looks more like a pressure relief port.
When we hit 3000 RPM (50-60 MPH) the van runs extreamly rough. I have noticed this also happens when I am idling, and bring the rpm up. It seems to happen right when the tach reachs 3000 RPM

Any ideas?

Alternate title: May be rejoining the Chrysler fold soon...

Hey Gang, since Mrs. Shipo traded our third minivan in on her new 2012 GTI 6-Speed late last fall we've been out of the Chrysler fold for the first time since 1995, and only the second time since 1988. Given that we sending "Number One Son" to college this summer with my Mazda3, which in turn means I'm going to be needing a new car. The decision is shaping up as follows:

What I want: A new 2013 F30 BMW 328i Sport Line with a 6-Speed manual. Unfortunately due to the three-plus years my wife was unemployed/self-employed, and the huge financial hole her failed business put us in, I’m thinking it would be more than a bit irresponsible to pony up for a new BMW at this juncture.

What I've been thinking I'd get: A new 2013 Mark VII Volkswagen GTI 6-Speed. I love driving my wife's GTI and was thinking a new GTI (a 4-Door this time) would be a decent fall-back from the 328i. Unfortunately with a kid heading off to college in a few months and the aforementioned financial hole we're in, a new GTI might still be a bordering on financially irresponsible.

What I'm now leaning toward: A new fully tarted-up 2013 Dodge Dart (in either Ralley or Limited trim) 6-Speed with the 1.4 liter turbo motor. So, this car would save me roughly $10,000 over the cost of the GTI, and closer to $20,000 over the cost of the 328i, be better appointed than the GTI, and get better (significantly better in the case of the VW) fuel economy than both; and the "only" downside is that it will (most likely) not be anywhere near as engaging to drive as the other two. Given that I'll be sending "Number One Daughter" off to college in 2015, I'm thinking I can happily coexist with a new Alfa Romeo (oops, I mean Dodge Dart) for the next three years.

I'll report back when I get a chance to test drive a new Dart. :D

Cargo liner. Normally our third row seats will be stowed and my golf buddies will be filling up the back with wet and dirty carts and bags and shoes. Occasionally we will be transporting people to and from the airport and will have the third row seat in use and will use the cargo area to hold luggage that may be wet and dirty. I don't feel that my application requires a lip on the mat(s) but a lip would be acceptable. I would like something that will not slide around as GOLFERS shove bags into the van.

I have been looking at alternatives at autoanything.com and nothing jumps out at me as a great all around solution.

Suggestions?

Ok, this is one of those "I have no one to blame but myself" posts, but here it goes.

My wife and I bought an '07 new and have really liked it. When we bought it, we wanted the DVD changer for trips with the kids. the van on the lot didnt' have one, but they assured us they could order one and install a factory system (which they did). Well, they outsourced the install (oddly enough to a shop that is supposed to be first rate) and it came back all scratched up, panels broken, solder on the floor mats, etc. We had everything cosmetic fixed (dealer took good care of us), but I never paid any attention to the DVD player as usually the kids had headphones on and I had the radio going. Fast forward about 5 years and I just started noticing that if the kids aren't using headphones and I switch from radio to DVD, the DVD is MUCH quieter than the radio/CD/etc. Did the installer not wire an amp in or something? I'm prety electrically inclined so I'm sure I could fix it, but I'd like to have a head start on the problem if possible. Will the shop manual show the proper wiring for this?

Thanks so much! You guys have been a really big help to me over the past year!

It looks like Chrysler made no provision as far as replacing this part without swapping out the entire fuel rail.
What am I supposed to do here. I don't want to take a chance on putting back a part that is dry rotted (you can't see the cracks in the picture but the dry rotted area is circled red).

I have a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan with some fuel related issues:
* Can only fill gas tank a gallon or so at a time until the pump shuts off. You can hear the fuel rise up the filler tube so it sounds like the tank is not venting properly?
* After filling tank, the fuel guage will only read abou 1/4 full then will slooooowly increase (while driving) to max level.
* Loud whistling sound coming from the gas tank on very hot days when driving.
* Starting car after it has been sitting for a few minutes, the engine splutters a little but (maybe 10 seconds or so) and then idles and runs fine after that.

I don't want to taint your diagnosis, but my first though was that the sending unit and/or pump within the tank was messed up. I recall dropping the tank years ago to investigate but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to remove the sending unit (and I've done plenty in the past). Is it even possible to remove the unit on this tank or do you have to replace the whole tank???
Thanks for any insight,

Just wanted to post my experience with this problem. The problem started at the end of the summer when I lost all blower motor speeds except for high. Did my research on this site and determined that the resistor pack was most likely the culprit. Replaced it and problem was solved...for a while. A few weeks later, I noticed that when the blower was set to the lowest speed setting that the blower would switch on and off and the A/C light would cycle as well. This went on for a while as I didn't have time to look into it. Then recently, the blower motor would fail to turn on unless you tapped the blower motor housing. This would happen only occasionally and I was planning to replace the motor. A few days before my planned replacement, I noticed a burning smell. I found the resistor connector pack connector was melting. Removed blower motor and took an amperage reading. It was drawing almost 17 amps at full speed. I went and found one at a junkyard and it pulled 11. So far so good. I dont know how long this motor will last but for now it is working well and actually blows harder than the old one and none of my previous symptoms are present. Thanks to all who post. I have learned and fixed alot of things based on the knowledge and walk through posts on this site.

I really cannot afford another vehicle being a single mom in a bad economy, should I just keep adding regular oil or consider putting myself in the hole financing something newer ? I think it's using more oil then it should, but it is almost 20 years old and I guess the 4 cylinders dont last as long as the 6 cylinder ones ?

Hi I wonder if anyone could help with some info on an "A" Post trim.

Here in the U.K. we get the Town and Country with various differences, and it's also called the Grand Voyager.

I have seen that the U.S. specification vehicles come with a grab handle on the "A" post, (I.E. the windscreen post where the front door hinges mount to the bodyshell.)

Do you call it the "A" post in the U.S?

The trim I am looking for is the one with the grab handle on it, which I suspect could be an issue to sort out with a partsman at a dealership here, as he would not have it on their computer files as an option, with it not being U.K. specification.

Also they seem to have a policy at the main dealer local to me, of not handing out part numbers which is not very helpful.

We do get the handle here, but it's fitted to our driver's side, and it what would be on your passenger side.

What I would like to do is fit an extra handle on the side where you normally have one, and we don't have it, as an extra handle.

I would like to find out a part number, and an idea of cost, and if it's possible to do please.

So I'm curious if anybody with trans issues, has ever heard a chirping/puttering noise before any real problems? Wife hears it all the time, I have heard it, and to me it sounds like a jetsons (cartoon) vehicle puttering along under my feet when accelerating. It doesn't do it all the time, but pretty often in the last maybe 300 miles (van has 5K on it now). Recently, my wife was trying to save gas using ECO mode, but she drives the van kind of hard, so I told her to stop using ECO mode and to me, it seems like it started after this.

We went to the dealership, and the trans specialist went for a quick ride with me, and of course, I couldn't replicate the noise at that particular time. So he nor I could hear anything at that particular time, and my wife was riding my ass lastnight for not getting him to hear it....sorry crazy lady, it just wasn't making the noise for me, can't perform miracles! Of course as soon as she got into it and headed back to work, she calls me and says she can hear it...why can't you make it make that noise? ugh, wanted to karate chop her in the throat at that moment.

Anywho, we heard the trans whine, that's normal to me and the mechanic, but at the moment, no chirping.

So I'm curious if anybody else is hearing a noise similar to what I described. Not feeling the harsh engagement unless in ECO mode, so I'm not overly concerned there. Wonder if I should pay up on a trans flush and filter replacement to potentially stave off any catastrophic failure.....I'm sure the dealership nor chrysler would be willing to absorb that cost ona 5K mile van that makes noises infrequently just to keep the customer happy....probably $2-250 to do that. Or just let the trans fail and hope it happens before the warranty expires.

Other than that, got no problems, just a concern about a strange noise :)
