VW recalls 44,000 vans
by Associated Press posted June 23, 2005 BERLIN -- Volkswagen said Thursday it is recalling 44,000 of its Touran vans worldwide to fix a clutch problem. The six-speed gearbox on two-liter TDI models of the multipurpose vehicle can develop excessive wear, leading to noise, damage and eventual failure, the German carmaker said in a statement.
It didn't indicate how much the recall, which affects vans manufactured in 2004 and 2005, would cost the company.
The company is counting on new models such as the Touran, the Touareg sports-utility vehicle and a new version of its Golf compact to offset fierce price competition in the United States.
