Grinding noise?

Upon a cold start (the van has been sitting a few days) about a second after I start the vehicle, a short, "grinding" noise comes from under the hood. It sounds kind of serious. This only happens upon a cold start though. When the van has been run for a bit, there is no sound. I was hoping it might be a belt or something. Can you guys give me some insight into this? It would be much appreciated.

Oh and by the way, I have a '98 Caravan with the 3.0L V6, 4 speed transmission and about 130,000km on the odometer.

Thank you!

PS. I hope it isn't a tranny issue. I really need this van to get to school.

Could be the starter solenoid is not retracting fast enough after you start it. And for it to happen only when it's cold, it kind of makes sense. If it continues to happen it will lead to the starter ring teeth on your converter to become worn down. Which would be a bigger problem.
